We are making this preliminary list available to help state and local entities identify funding streams that may be affected in connection with NIMS implementation requirements. This should not be considered a definitive list of federal preparedness grants and agreements.

Subject: NIMS training courses

Good Afternoon NIC;

I have a question in regards to NIMS training courses. The suggested hours that is listed in IS-100 Introduction to Incident Command System, I-100 is 8.5 hours. IS-200 ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents suggested hours is 13.5 ICS-300 and ICS-400 courses total approximately 31.5 hours. The total hours of these above courses totals 53.5 hours as indicated in each of the instructors manuals.

We have a the opportunity to take a program that is 16 hours in length and is being sold as meeting NIC requirement for 100, 200, 300 and 400.

My questions;
  1. Is there any problems with us taking the course/program that has the shorter hours?
  2. Should we insist on some kind of guarantee from the provider of the 16 hour program?
  3. What advise can you give us about these choices?
If you could respond as soon as possible that would be great. We have to make a decision soon.

Thank you for contacting the NIMS Integration Center.

The NIC does not endorse or condone the participation in such courses.
These types of courses are cropping up all over, and often seem to be merely a forced march through the Power Points with little educational benefit to the students in attendance. Plus, the intent of the 300, 400 series is for folks to take 300, and then go get some experience using the concepts presented in 300 before taking 400. Shortening the courses seriously shortchanges the students and does not give them the necessary skills to safely and successfully manage an incident.

David Bletscher
