Former Moorhead Fire Chief Marty Soeth dies

Forum Staff Reports, The Forum
Published Wednesday, June 22, 2005

Marty Soeth, Moorhead's former longtime fire chief, was found dead in his bed this morning, Moorhead police said.  He is believed to have died of natural causes, police said. Soeth was 67.
He retired in January 2004 after nearly 42 years with the Moorhead Fire Department. At the time of his retirement, Soeth said he could have retired 10 years earlier, but wasn't ready.  "I still liked the job - and I still do like the job," said Soeth in a Forum interview in 2004. "I just started thinking maybe I should turn it over to a younger person."  Fargo Fire Chief Bruce Hoover has credited Soeth with strengthening ties between Moorhead's and Fargo's fire departments.  Joel Hewitt replaced Soeth as Moorhead's fire chief last summer.
