METH LAB AlERT - Anhydrous Ammonia Manufacturing Technique

This was just sent to us from the Missouri Fire Marshals office.

Entire document with photos can be downloaded here.

It is information about the Meth Cooks making their own Anhydrous Ammonia.

We have seen this in our area recently and the LE is saying that it will only
get worse as more cooks learn this process.

REF: Anhydrous Ammonia Manufacturing Technique

DATE: November 17, 2004

Most of us have heard that Meth cookers have developed a method
for manufacturing anhydrous ammonia. I personally did not have any
information on what the process entailed until recently. The
attached photographs were taken of a dismantled anhydrous ammonia
system that was used by meth cooks.

There are some dangers that are associated with this method that we
need to be aware of. If something similar to this is located you should
be aware that the anhydrous cooker creates anhydrous ammonia for
a period of time after the meth cook has completed his cook. Any items
suspected of being used for this process should not be stored in an
enclosed location.

The process includes the use of a tank, fertilizer, cold compress chemicals,
red devil lye, and sulfuric acid. Meth cooks empty the chemical contents
of cold compress packs, fertilizer, Red Devil Lye, and sulfuric acid into a
tank. The chemical reaction creates a gas that is channeled through a tube
of copper which becomes cold from the chemical reaction. This process
turns the vapor into liquid form and the liquid is captured into a bottle. This
liquid is then stored in a tank for future use to manufacture methamphetamine.

I am not absolutely sure how this process works and I'm sure there are
variations to this process. I hope these pictures will assist you in determining
whether or not you have stumbled across a working anhydrous ammonia
manufacturing system.

If you have additional information in regards to this system please send me
any information you have.

FIREFIGHTER CAUTION !!!!! - New Meth Lab Tactic

Critical Information on Fire Extinguishers from IN Fire Chiefs Assn
and Chief Riehm of Kendallville FD

FIREFIGHTER CAUTION !!!!!

Susan, can you get this out to everyone please?
Mike Riehm, Kendallville Fire Dept

Fire Extinguishers are being filled with anhydrous ammonia !!

This is the latest attempt by those who cook meth to hide the anhydrous.
One of these extinguishers was brought into Fire Station #1 on 11-9-04 to
be repaired after being found in an apartment complex parking lot.

It was full of anhydrous ammonia!!

Warning Signs
The horn had been cut off of the hose.
Gauge still showed pressure.
Teflon pipe tape was visible from around the valve assembly.

Watch out for Anhydrous in BBQ LP gas tanks, and Thermos bottles
also....basically anything that can hold pressure and is cancelable is open
game for the Meth Cooks. A good tip off is if there is any brass on the tank
valves it will usually turn it green from the reaction of the Anhydrous.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
TRANSPORTING ANHYDROUS
AMMONIA FOR METH LABS
Thanks to Tom Romaine DNR

I just wanted to pass along some additional information on the use of
fire extinguishers for transporting anhydrous.  The warning signs you
list are great, but there are variations to them, such as.

"-The horn had been cut off of the hose."   The hose can still
be completely intact.

"-Gauge still showed pressure."   The gauge may show pressure,
but in time it can become totally obliterated, so it can't be read at all.

"-Teflon pipe tape was visible from around the valve assembly."
The valve assembly can still be completely intact with no signs of
tampering or change.

"-Brass fittings will turn bluish/green." & "-Aluminum will not
discolor."   The metal can become bluish/green, just like brass.

At the time of recovery, the gauge was readable but showed it had been
discharged, but in time became totally obliterated.
