2009 NFA Course

National Fire Academy Direct Delivery
Offered In Minnesota
August 15 and 16, 2009

Note: The NFA rescheduled this to August

Fire Behavior in a Single Family Occupancy (FBSFO) and Fire Modeling (FM)

Do you often wonder if you have made the right strategy or tactical decisions when it comes to a single family residence fire?  Do you wish that you had a better understanding of the science of fire behavior? If you have thought about these questions then you need to come to St Cloud Technical College on August 15 and 16th 2009 and attend the National Fire Academy course, Fire Behavior in a Single-Family Residence.

Attention firefighters and fire commanders, this class is NOT a fire operations strategy or tactics course, but explains the science and engineering of fire behavior and it  will increase awareness of fire behavior in single-family residences. Students will gain comprehensive and pragmatic knowledge of fire behavior, and subsequently develop effective firefighting strategies, the ability to improve firefighter safety, and reduce risks associated with fighting fires in single-family structures.

Course Name: Fire Behavior in a Single Family Occupancy (FBSFO) and Fire Modeling (FM)   Course Code F366

Delivery Type Off-Campus (Direct Delivery)

Course Length 2.0 day(s)

Course Description

This course uses results from test burns of commonly-found items in simulated single-family occupancies to provide firefighters with pragmatic cognitive and analytical skills for understanding fire behavior. Through scientific and engineering studies, observation and analysis of videotaped test burns and burn data, students will learn the value, application, and limitations of fire-testing and test methods, instruments, and equipment. The course presents scenarios and case studies to enable firefighters to assess and devise strategies for fighting actual fires, based on their ability to apply data from test burns. Students will learn the burn characteristics of individual items commonly found in single-family occupancies, as well as individual rooms, based on specific variables, such as fire detection and firefighting equipment and room size and layout. Analysis and discussion of test results will enable students to evaluate and interpret these results, and develop safe, effective firefighting strategies.

Fire Modeling (FM)

The course presents data from test burns of single-family occupancies to enable firefighters to evaluate, analyze, and use fire computer models effectively, such as the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). By viewing expert scientific and engineering perspectives, and discussing and analyzing results of videotaped test burns and burn data, students will learn the benefits, applications, and limitations of fire modeling. Students will apply data from fire scenarios to the FDS to understand how different conditions may affect the outcome of an actual fire. Students also will be introduced to different types of fire tests, with explanations of their application and reliability.

This course is not a fire operations strategy or tactics course, but explains the science and engineering of fire behavior.
