Minnesota Firefighters Serve On The Following

Boards Appointed By Associations

Minnesota Fire Service Foundation

8100 Wayzata Blvd.
St Louis Park, MN 55426

The Minnesota Fire Service Foundation incorporated in 1985 through a joint effort of the Minnesota State Fire Department Association; The Minnesota Professional Fire Fighter's Association, and the Minnesota State Fire Chief's Association. The Foundation is administered by a Board of nine people, consisting of each organization appointing three members. One of the purposes of this Foundation is to raise funds from donations and sales of miniature memorial statues and memorial coin sets and administer these funds for educational purposes.

Any year in which the fund balance of the Minnesota Fire Service Foundation exceeds $3,000.00, a minimum of two scholarships of $1000.00 each shall be awarded for college or post secondary education.

One scholarship shall be awarded to a child of a deceased firefighter and a minimum of one to a child of
an active or retired firefighter.

The Foundation may at its discretion award additional scholarships if the financial condition of the Foundation can support the awards. The number of scholarships to be awarded each year may be determined by dividing the fund balance as of April 1 of each year by 3000. Two additional alternates will be drawn in case scholarships are not accepted by any of the original recipients.

ELIGIBILITY
Children and stepchildren of active, retired or deceased Minnesota firefighters are eligible for Foundation scholarships through the entire calendar year of reaching age twenty-three (23). The spouse of a deceased firefighter is eligible for a Foundation scholarship for a period of up to five (5) years following the death of the firefighter, starting with the calendar year following the death of the firefighter. These applicants shall be included with those applicants received from children of deceased firefighters.

APPLICATIONS
Applications may be obtained from the Secretary of the Foundation or from Regional Directors of the represented Associations. All complete applications shall be postmarked no later than March 31, of the year it is to be awarded.

SELECTION
Selection shall be at the April Board Meeting of the Foundation. If no applicant names have been submitted, no awards will be made that year. If more than one applicant for either of the scholarships, selection shall be made by a lottery drawing with no consideration of need. One scholarship to a child of a deceased firefighter shall be selected first. The remaining applicants of a child of a deceased firefighter shall be combined with those of a child of an active or retired firefighter to complete the selection of the scholarships to be awarded that year. Applicants selected shall be required to provide the Foundation with confirmation of their enrollment as a full time student in a college or post secondary educational institution prior to October 1, of the year awarded.

RECIPIENTS
Upon receipt of the Recipient Form and the official document certifying the applicant’s enrollment as a full time student from the school they will be attending, usually in August, the scholarship check will be forwarded to the recipient upon Board approval. If any recipient is not eligible, refuses the scholarship or has not provided certification of enrollment prior to October 1 of the year awarded, the alternate shall be notified and given until December 1 of the year awarded, to provide certification.
