Concurrent Session Topics
Session 1: Vehicle Firefighting
“Train-the-Trainer” - 2 Hours
Vehicle fires have several unique hazards and circumstances that set
them apart from other types of fires. The “Fighting Vehicle Fires”
course examines hazards and circumstances associated with vehicle
fires, and will address strategies and tactics for vehicle fires. This
train-the-trainer will prepare you to teach this course.
Instructor: MnSCU Staff
Session 2: Building Affordable
Portable Training Props, Gadgets and Gizmos - 1 Hour
This class will teach you how to economically build training props for
your department. With training budgets limited, this class will help
you build props that your department will use every training drill. A
follow-up session will demonstrate examples of some of the props
discussed in this class.
Instructor:
Session 3: How to Use and
Trouble Shoot A/V Equipment - 1 Hour
Audio/Visual equipment is a cornerstone of effective instruction. Yet
many instructors struggle to see the newer AV equipment. This workshop
will demonstrate effective use of overhead projectors; computers and
powerpoint software with computer based projectors; slide projectors;
camera based visual projectors, digital cameras; and more. This will be
a “hands-on” program. Bring your “questions” with you.
Instructor:
Session 4: Laws and Regulations
Related to Training and Instructors - 1 Hour
This class will teach you the variety of regulations and laws that
impact training activities for your department. There is a great need
for training of Training Officers and Fire Instructors to be informed
about the current information, mandates and new challenges they may
face every day and year. This seminar is for anyone who maybe, or is
currently, involved in training of firefighters or overseeing a
department training program.
Instructor:
Session 5: Training for Life
Safety “Everyone Goes Home” - 1 Hour
To ensure that “everyone goes home”, this workshop is designed to
assist fire departments in implementing the 16 Firefighter Life Safety
Initiatives. The Firefighter Life Safety “Resource Kit” (developed by
the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation), which has been mailed to
most fire departments, will serve as the basis of this workshop. During
this workshop, we will review the lessons and presentations found in
the resource kit, such as changing the fire service culture and fire
service training techniques. We will also sample several of the
included videos.
Instructor:
Session 6: FireLearn Online
Training Update - 1 Hour
Receive the latest news on the e-Learning component to Fundamentals of
Fire Fighter Skills, FireLearn is a series of online modules that
brings Fire Fighter I & II material to life with interactive audio,
video, Flash™ animation, photographs, illustrations, and case-based
scenarios. FireLearn covers the entire spectrum of the NFPA 1001,
Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications and is designed
to enhance students’ learning experience by allowing them to experiment
with key concepts and skills in the safety of a virtual environment.
FireLearn can be used in a variety of ways. Use the individual modules
or the complete course as; A distance learning alternative to the
traditional classroom setting A review tool to assess students progress
and reinforce important concepts presented in the classroom In a
modular format to clarify more challenging topics and allow students to
experiment with skills in the safety of a virtual environment
Instructor: Jones and Bartlett Staff
Session 7: Live Burn Updates –
Teaching In Mobile Burn Props/Acquired Structures - 1 Hour
The purpose and intent of this session is to provide the training
officers and instructors with forum for discussion on the working
knowledge of the requirements of NFPA 1403 – Standard for Live Fire
Training Evolutions and the ability to properly prepare and conduct
live fire training evolutions. Teaching in Mobile Burn Props and
Acquired Structures will be discussed. Further, it is intended to
provide the training officers and instructors with an update from State
regulatory agencies to including DNR, MPCA and OSHA.
Instructor:
Session 8: Objective Based
Strategies and Tactics TtT - 2 Hours
Strategy & Tactics training has been the heart and soul of fire
service training for more than 150 years. This high-energy,
high-impact, multi-media presentation has been designed to address some
of the more common issues facing the fire service today including:
fireground command & control, RIT operations, accountability,
fireground benchmarking, communications, and air management. Using a
series of interactive scenarios, this program will allow attendees to
witness first hand the effectiveness of “Objective Based Assignments”
and how such a program can enhance the safety and effectiveness of the
modern fireground. This program includes a number of interactive
computer based simulations for attendees representing all ranks – A
great opportunity to discuss proven, progressive based strategy &
tactics for the modern fireground.
Instructor: Tim Sendelbach
Session 9: Ethanol Hazards
Awareness Program TtT- 2 Hours
New technology motor vehicle fuels continue to make the safety of
emergency response personnel more difficult everyday. This course will
highlight the newest vehicle power fuels in use today. Discussion will
include information regarding primarily Ethanol or other E-85 blends
and other vehicle fuels such as Biodiesel. There have been numerous
ethanol plants built in recent years with more construction planned for
the future. If there is an ethanol plant in your jurisdiction or mutual
aid response area, do you know how to respond to an emergency at the
plant? This class will highlight main functions of a plant and the
precautions your fire department should take when responding to a plant
emergency. There may not be a plant in your area, but are you prepared
to handle a small/large spill of E-85 or other alternative fuels? Find
out what Firefighting Foams will work and what will not work to deal
with these fuels. Traditional methods of Class B Foam attacks will not
necessarily work on these fuels. We will do hands on demonstrations in
the afternoon with a flammable liquids burn pan so bring your turnouts
and SCBA’s.
Instructor: Bruce Roed
Session 10: Department Needs
Assessment on Training Topics - 1 Hour
The Training Officer needs to provide a broad range of activities for
fire & EMS professionals. In order for the training staff to
deliver the training your department needs exactly the way your
firefighters want it, you need to assess the needs of your personnel,
evaluate your agencies risk, and plan a comprehensive program. This
session will discuss methods of accomplishing the task.
Instructor:
Session 11: Training Program
Resources - 1 Hour
The class will help you keep your people interested and enthusiastic
about in-house training. Various available resources will be discussed.
If you're in charge of training/drills or responsible for the
instruction for your department this class is designed to assist those
who are required to plan different meaningful ideas for training
sessions.
